Textbook

As discussed in the course outline, the textbook for the course will be

  • generatingfunctionology, by Herbert Wilf, 2nd or 3rd edition.

The 2nd edition is downloadable from Wilf's old webpage, so we will mainly follow that.

Other sources

We will have a lively online discussion in the UP e-classroom system. Asking and answering questions of your peers will be of great benefit to your development.

I like the treatment in Miklós Bóna's book A walk through combinatorics a fair bit. Bóna is fairly clear in explaining the combinatorial meaning of the product or composition of generating functions.

Wikipedia has a number of articles on mathematical topics. They are mostly well-written and accurate. Wikipedia is a good source for extra background on many of the topics we will discuss.
